Divination Series: Scrying
Scrying is one of the most common types of divination!
Scrying is defined as “foretelling the future using a crystal ball or other reflective object or surface.” Moving further into the explanation, scrying is using these semi-reflective surfaces to receive images from them. The goal is to then interpret these visions in a way that is applicable to ourselves or a particular question we had in mind.
Seldom is scrying as cinematic as a film being played out before us. No, no. Scrying is much more subtle than that. It is the use of both visions, coupled with our intuition and experiences taking place within this medium.
Think back to childhood when you’d lay on the grass in the park on a warm day and peer into the sky, making sense of the shapes before you. Did you do this? Congratulations, you’re a witch. I’m joking. However, this is a valid form of scrying if you pair this with interpreting these shapes and your personal relationship with what is being revealed to you.
How Do I Scry?
With magic, one of the most fundamental components you must learn is meditation as well as visualization. Once you’ve mastered these or even have a working knowledge and application, everything else will fall into place because you have a solid foundation for channeling your mind and guiding your energy.
So, with that said, the first step to scrying is to get your mind in the position to be receptive to these frequencies by entering a trance-like state. Once you have done so, you will need to peer into your object and soften your gaze. Pay attention to the shapes appearing before you, as well as other sources of information flowing into you. Once you have received this information, you will now need to take it and apply it back to yourself.
Symbolism is a personal journey. Imagine we’re back in the park, and we both witness a lion appear to us in the clouds. For you, a lion means strength, honor, and protection. And for me, I’d have a flashback to the time I ignored the “spray range” for a male lion at the local zoo, and he made me his bitch.

Types of Scrying
Crystal Scrying: This type of scrying is perhaps the most touted in mainstream media. Images of a person peering deeply into their crystal ball and receiving information.
Water Scrying: This is exactly what it sounds like! Instead of using a crystal ball to receive the information, you peer into either a body of water or a surface of the water and interpret what it is that is revealed to you.
Fire Scrying: Gazing into a fire is majestical in its own right, no? Well, you can add onto this by gazing into the fire and interpreting the messages you read in the flames.
Smoke Scrying: Where there’s fire, there’s smoke. Or something like that. You can also direct your focus onto the smoke emerging from the fire to receive messages through this as well.
Wax Scrying: You can also use the wax from a candle to scry! This can be done by either the drippings on the plate or intentionally spilling wax onto other surfaces and reading what you see.
Mirror Scrying: This is typically done with a dark mirror, and the methods are the same.
Earth Scrying: Much like water and fire, you can also use the earth! This can be done by putting soil onto a flat surface and making sense of the shapes and patterns revealed to you.
Eye Scrying: This can also be referred to as “soul gazing,” and it’s done by peering into a person’s eyes and interpreting what you see in the shapes of their eyes.
